Junior Amy Schmidt went unbeaten in 20 games as the Muhlenberg women’s tennis team opened its season with an 8-1 indoor home win against Moravian.

The victory extended the Mules’ lead in the 2004-05 Matte Award standings to 6-4. The next scheduled Matte contests are lacrosse games on March 16 (men’s) and 17 (women’s).

Moravian played its traditional season in the fall and did not compete with the same lineup it used to compile a 13-3 record. None of the Greyhounds’ top three singles players last fall competed against the Mules.

Muhlenberg was impressive in sweeping the doubles, with 8-0 victories from Schmidt and sophomore Pam Kimmelman at No. 1 and senior Emily Oster and freshman Ashley Reed at No. 2. The third doubles team of junior Stacy Lipschutz and sophomore Kelly Fraser won, 8-2.

Schmidt dominated at first singles for her seventh career 6-0, 6-0 shutout and her 11th consecutive singles win in dual matches. Kimmelman, playing at second singles for the first time, dropped her first game before winning the next 12.

Reed, Lipschutz and Fraser all won their singles matches in straight sets, helping the Mules extend their homecourt winning streak to 26.

Behind three school-record performances, the Muhlenberg women’s indoor track and field team is in third place after the first day of the Centennial Conference Championships, hosted by Dickinson. The Mules are 14 points behind the host school with 10 events to go.

The lone gold medal for the Mules came courtesy of the women’s 4x200-meter relay team of senior Ashlie Hankee, freshman Jenna Lombardi, senior Danielle Bovelle and junior Kristen Seiler. The foursome became the first Muhlenberg women’s relay team to win a conference championship, clocking in at 1:50.90 to break the school record by one one-hundredth of a second. Seiler took the baton in second place and out-sprinted Haverford’s anchor to the finish line.

Seiler, who set a personal record while finishing eighth in the long jump, also ran a strong split in the distance-medley relay, helping the Mules take second place. Junior Karen Mount had an outstanding anchor leg in the DMR and an outstanding race in the mile, finishing second in 5:14.92 to break the school record she set last week by more than five seconds.

Lombardi set the third school record, running 7.61 to qualify for the finals in the 55 meters. Lombardi was seeded eighth but posted the third-fastest qualifying time.

Hankee and sophomore Rachel Drosdick both posted ECAC-qualifying times in reaching the 55-hurdles finals. Drosdick earned a bronze medal by placing third in the long jump.

Senior Kristin Boydston also picked up a bronze in the shot put, finishing in the top six for the fourth year in a row.

Senior John Brodowski was the top performer for the men, placing second in the long jump and fourth in the pole vault, qualifying for the final in the 55 hurdles and leading off the sixth-place 4x200 relay team.

Sophomore Stephen Rothwell won two bronze medals, one in the mile and the other in the DMR.
