Tennis Teams Go 2-1; Golf Seventh Women’s Tennis Muhlenberg swept all six singles matches en route to an 8-1 victory over Dickinson in its home opener. Juniors Jenn Powell and Carly Rotfeld, who are the veterans on a Mule team dominated by freshmen, set an excellent example for their younger teammates claiming a quick 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles. Both came out victorious in their singles matches as well both holding their opponents to a total of four earned games. Powell secured a 6-4, 6-0 decision at No. 1, and Rotfeld clinched a 6-1, 6-3 triumph at No. 3. Their freshmen teammates didn’t disappoint either, bringing four more singles wins. Freshman Lindsay Schmidt extended her winning run in Centennial Conference action, claiming a singles success at No. 6 and a doubles victory at No. 3 with Danielle Winston. Schmidt is a combined 6-0 in CC matches. Click here for box score. Men’s Tennis Muhlenberg split a pair of encounters played in Baltimore. In their first match for the day, the Mules were swept by 15th-ranked Centennial Conference foe Johns Hopkins, 9-0. Several hours later, the squad bounced back with an 8-1 success over Goucher. The Mules won all three doubles matches and conceded only one loss in the singles matches. Freshman Wayne Mitchel and sophomores Jonathan Farber, Mark Apostolos and Matt Kral registered singles and doubles wins against the Gophers. Click here for box scores. Men’s Golf The Mules finished the first day of the McDaniel Spring Invitational, their first competition of 2008, in seventh place among 12 teams. The tournament is a mini-preview of the Centennial Conference Championships, which will be conducted on the same course in a month. Muhlenberg is fourth among the six CC squads present. McGovern is third on the Mules with 30 points and has three hat tricks this season.

The Muhlenberg women’s lacrosse team continued its high-scoring ways in a 20-9 win at Haverford.

The Mules (7-2, 2-2) have reached the 20-goal mark three times this season and are averaging nearly 16 goals per game on the campaign. They have scored in double digits in seven consecutive games.

Teamwork was on display against the Fords (5-4, 1-2), as Muhlenberg set a school record with 16 assists.

Senior Taylor Armstrong led 12 Muhlenberg players in the scoring column with three goals and four assists. Junior Ruth Morrongiello added four goals and two assists, and sophomore Amanda McGovern netted three goals, including two in the last 45 seconds of the first half to give the Mules a 12-4 lead at the break.

Freshman Christine Van Hise capped the scoring with her first career goal.

Muhlenberg is 7-2 through nine games for only the second time in its history heading into Wednesday’s matchup against defending national champion Franklin & Marshall.
