Muhlenberg won its fourth straight Matte Award by defeating Moravian in 11 of 18 head-to-head competitions in the 2006-07 school year. The two schools have competed for the Matte Award every year since 1987-88. Named for the late Aaron Matte (Muhlenberg 70), a strong supporter of local college athletics, the trophy goes to the school with the better record in head-to-head competition in all sports. The fall sports gave the Mules a commanding 6-1 lead this year, and they officially clinched with a baseball win at Moravian on April 9. See below for a complete rundown of Matte events.

The Matte Award is great because it brings all Muhlenberg teams together for a common purpose, said Courtney. I know I always come out of [the Moravian game] with extra bumps and bruises, commented Mefford. It gets pretty physical because everyone knows whats on the line. The Muhlenberg-Moravian rivalry will get an added boost in 2007-08 when the Greyhounds join the Centennial Conference for football. The two schools have not played a conference contest in any sport since 1993. |
