TOOHILL, ORIS TIE RECORDS
MENS LACROSSE The Mules (6-6, 2-6) closed to within a goal five times 4-3 late in the first half and 6-5, 7-6, 8-7 and 9-8 in the second half but the Bears scored the next goal on all but the last occasion. After scoring the last goal with 5:25 to play, Muhlenberg came up short on four possessions with a chance to tie. Senior Sean Toohill had a goal and two assists to tie the programs all-time scoring record with 106 career points. His goal the 75th of his career, two shy of the school record came on a pretty feed from behind the net by fellow senior Cliff Burwell on the extra man. Among the other seniors playing their final game with the Mules, Steven Toto recorded four ground balls and Kyle Hart one.
BASEBALL Oris drove in a run with a groundout in the first game and a single in the second, increasing his career total to 110. After the latter hit, in the eighth inning, senior Jason Bonder doubled to put the tying runs in scoring position, but the next two batters were retired, ending the threat. |
The Muhlenberg track and field team took full advantage of its final
tuneup before the Centennial Conference championship meet and earned two
school records, an NCAA automatic bid, four first-place finishes and nine
ECAC qualifiers at the Lehigh Games.
The second school record came on the mens side. Senior Matthew Sallese hurled a throw of 49-11 in the shot put, breaking the previous school record (49-3), which was one of the oldest in the book and stood for 31 years. His throw also qualified him for the ECAC championships. The Mules had athletes finish first in three other events, all from the mens squad. Sophomore Stuart Udis took home the gold in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:54.99, while classmate David Chorney finished ahead of the pack in the 1500 meters (3:59.90). In the 4x100-meter relay, the all-freshman team of Steve Liapis, Brendan Kirk, Eric Miller and Jeremiah Lachaud set the pace with a time of 43:51. All three of those finishes qualified for ECACs. The mens team saw two others qualify for the ECAC championships: senior Lex Mercado in the 800 meters (1:56.00) and Kirk in the 400-meter hurdles (55.99). Kirks time put him in third place all-time at Muhlenberg in that event. On the womens side, freshman Caitlin Heffern joined Mitchell in qualifying for ECACs in the javelin, as she finished seventh with a throw of 116-5. The final qualifiers came in the womens 4x100-meter relay team, as senior Lauren Carballo, junior Erika Koop, junior Emily Karel and freshman Alex Faust finished the event in 50.71.
